Mohenjo_Daro

aka. Mound of the Dead

Built in 2600 BCE and Located in the Indus Valley Civilization; Mohenjo-Daro is one of the largest settlements in South Asia, more specifically located in the province of Sindh,Pakistan. Mohenjo-Daro is approximatley 3 miles in diameter, formed in a gridlike formation and were built of mainly burnt and unfired mud bricks. This settlement was divided into two regions, a fortress area and a citadel. The citadel was approximately 200 yards wide and 400 yards long; it was on a mud and brick platform that raised it 50 feet above the lower city. The citadel was the main point for battle and for protection whereas the lower city consisted of homes.

There were many artifacts found from the Indus settlement around 1922. The most famous artifact being the "Dancing Girl" which is 4500 years old. The archiologist Wheeler made this discovery from a house in the lower city of Mohenjo-Daro in 1926. Then in 1927 another statue was found by Gregory Possehl, given the name of "Priest King". These two sculptures, along with other artifacts, tell archiologist about the type of people that lived there. It gives them a greater depth in meaning of the Indus-Saravsati city.

Mohenjo-Daro is located adjacent to Lothal and Harappa which are two similar cultures to Mohenjo-Daro. In the province of Sandh, Pakistan, Mohenjo-Daro was found during the same time of the Egyptian ruins. The settlement of Mohenjo-Daro is on a flood plain and is burried by the flooded plains, however, it was prominant during the time of the Indus Valley Civilization. The ridge allowed the city to be elevated above the other surrounding plains. Mohenjo-Daro is between the Indus River Valley on the west and the Ghaggar-Hakra (another tribe) on the east. The ridge has been expanded by building giant mud brick platforms which is how most of this settlement began to be atleast 12 meters above the modern plain level and much higher above the ancient plain level.

The Dancing Girl is very interesting. What are some of the ideas researchers have regarding this statue?
